How CBD Can Help Combat Depression
One of the most challenging things about depression besides the illness itself is finding the right medication that can make you feel normal. Not only are there side-effects that can make your condition worse, but anti-depressants can also take weeks before showing any signs of improvement or adverse effects. This long wait period can make the journey of finding the right pill difficult, but CBD oil may be able to change this process.
A recent study that was published this past June discovered that cannabidiol (CBD) might act as a fast-acting antidepressant. While the trials are still in early phases, the rodent models that received CBD oil started having changes in their brain chemistry within the first thirty minutes of taking CBD.
How CBD Helps With Depression
Scientists have discovered that in the brain of someone who is depressed, there is a lack of certain chemicals as well as a loss in mass in some regions of the brain. Cannabidiol has shown to elevate some of these chemicals leading scientists to believe that it could be a valid treatment option for this mental health disorder.
The first chemical that cannabidiol elevates is called synaptophysin, which scientists aren’t exactly sure what this protein does. What they do know, is that animals who have a lack in this chemical can function normally, however, they also experience behavioral changes.
PSD-95 is also another protein that is lacking in subjects who have depression. This protein plays a crucial role in maintaining stable synaptic connections in the brain required for optimal cognitive functions. In the rodent model, they found that this protein was also elevated, which may lead to a decrease in depressive symptoms.
One of the more exciting chemicals that CBD elevated within thirty minutes of administration is BDNF. This alteration in brain chemistry is so intriguing because BDNF acts as the brain’s fertilizer. Scientists believe that there is a loss of brain mass in some regions of the brain, like the prefrontal cortex and the hippocampus. By elevating this chemical, CBD may be able to reverse the effects of depression by repairing and maintaining the health of your brain cells.
CBD May Be Able To Help With Symptoms Of Depression
While your CBD hemp oil is at work in your brain, it also may be able to help with some of the symptoms that come along with the disorder. When taking cannabidiol, you may notice a difference in these symptoms:
- Weight Changes
Talk To Your Doctor
If you are suffering from depression and think CBD hemp oil is the best treatment option for you, talk to your doctor about it. If you are already on medication, quitting cold turkey to switch to CBD may cause some adverse effects that you can avoid by utilizing the assistance of your doctor. If you are on other medications as well, CBD may alter the way your body metabolizes them making it less effective. Your doctor has the tools to monitor you closely through your recovery, so keep them in the loop when making changes to your medical regimen.
