CBD Oil for ADHD: What You Need To Know

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, most commonly known as ADHD, is one of the most common disorders of childhood. According to the American Psychiatric Association, 5 percent of children have ADHD with some studies reporting even higher rates.

This disorder is not limited to childhood, however, it can continue into adolescence and adulthood. It is commonly thought of as a childhood disorder as it is generally diagnosed due to behavior and focusing on issues that are generally discovered at school or at home.

ADHD can be treated by many prescription medications but it is often quite laborious to find the medication that works for each specific patient along with dosage. Side effects of pharmaceutical prescriptions for ADHD range from sleep issues, headaches, irritability, to decreased appetite.

Any of these issues can cause a decrease in quality of life, especially for adults. What is an adult to do to avoid headaches, sleep deprivation, and irritability while having to work and function day to day with ADHD?

Some CBD enthusiasts are beginning to claim that CBD oil for ADHD can be an effective form of treatment for ADHD without all of the negative side effects. There are mixed reviews in the research world for the use of cannabis to treat ADHD. Read on to decide for yourself.

What Is CBD?

CBD Oil For ADHD

Cannabidiol, better known as CBD oil, is a compound found in the cannabis plant. Cannabis, or marijuana plants, produce chemical compounds known as cannabinoids, cannabidiol is one of those compounds and it is extracted from the plant for use in many cannabis products and CBD products specifically.

One of the benefits of CBD oil as a medical cannabis treatment is that it does not contain THC, the compound that causes the “high” and psychoactive effects found in traditional marijuana.

This is because CBD generally comes from the hemp plant versus a marijuana plant. Marijuana has a high THC content while hemp is generally grown for textiles and clothing with only .3 percent THC.

The Research On CBD Oil For ADHD

Research surround all that cannabis oil is able to do and treat is still new and ongoing. There are many medical conditions that researchers have proven CBD hemp oil is effective in treating and others that are only speculated or advertised by individual users.

CBD oil for ADHD is one of those areas that is primarily speculation, but a number of ADHD patients who have used CBD oil for ADHD treatment have found it to be effective.

Researchers surmise that cannabis as a method for reducing or eliminating ADHD symptoms would not be successful as marijuana is generally known to impair attention, functioning, and inhibition.

Other disorders of the brain have been shown to be effectively treated or symptoms reduced with cannabidiol oil such as epilepsy, seizures, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, chronic pain, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The issue with being able to plainly state that CBD oil for ADHD symptoms works is the lack of clinical trials and other research.

How Can CBD Oil Help With ADHD?

While there is a lack of research on CBD oil for ADHD treatment there is still reason to believe that it be effective over ADHD medications due to how the compound works in the brain. The brain and body contain receptors known as cannabinoid receptors; CB1 and CB2. This is referred to as the endocannabinoid system.

When CBD oil is ingested or inhaled the cannabidiol compound reacts with these receptors. CB1 is the most abundant cannabinoid receptor it the brain and is most commonly associated with epilepsy. The CB2 receptor is found more in the immune system and is mostly associated with pain and inflammation.

The reaction causes the body to use more of the cannabinoids that it makes naturally on its own. This means the body does not actually use the CBD taken in, but it acts as a trigger for the body to begin using its own cannabinoids more effectively.

Essentially CBD works indirectly to treat the symptoms as these natural endocannabinoids will begin to attach to receptors to treat specific symptoms. Cannabinoids also react on dopamine receptors which may result in a calming reaction.

These processes may help ADHD as anxiety and hyperactivity are common symptoms associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Symptom Management

When the body begins using its naturally occurring cannabinoids an onslaught of effects of CBD being taken in begin. Primarily the user should see a decrease in anxiety and a reduction in hyperactivity.

This is one reason medical marijuana and other forms of cannabis are effective in treating these symptoms because they too contain cannabidiol.

The effects of CBD and its ability to manage symptoms of many different health issues is the primary reason it is becoming so popular as alternative medicine. A particularly

Dravet syndrome is a childhood epilepsy disorder that causes drug-resistant seizures. A study published in 2017 showed a decrease in symptoms, specifically convulsive seizures when cannabidiol was used as treatment. The FDA also approved a drug containing CBD for the treatment epilepsy, Epidiolex.

Attention deficit disorder, also known as ADD, is a type of ADHD which is determined by symptoms. ADD patient’s symptoms are generally the same minus hyperactivity that is common in ADHD patients.

Because of this ADD and ADHD symptoms may both be able to be reduced with CBD oil.

Substance Abuse

There is concern that ADHD can be a risk factor for developing substance abuse later in life. A 2014 study looked at 376 graduate students with ADHD and saw that childhood inattention was associated with cannabis use.

A 2017 study found that young adults with ADHD were more likely to allow impulsivity to result in drug or alcohol use.

Advantages Of Choosing CBD Oil Over Conventional Treatments

CBD Oil For ADHD

Prescription medications commonly used for ADHD are categorized as either stimulants or non-stimulants. CBD oil has minimal side effects and includes the potential for upset stomach or drowsiness.

CBD is also more tolerated than conventional treatments for ADHD, up to 1500mg per day in fact. Another advantage to choosing CBD oil for ADHD is the ability to bypass the need for a prescription.

Bypass The Side Effects Of Stimulant Medications

Stimulant medications are used by 70 to 80 percent of children ADHD patients. This form of medication can result in insomnia, headache, dry mouth, mood changes, weight loss, and poor appetite.

These are all negative side effects that would impair anyone’s quality of life and ability to normally function, yet children taking these types of medications are expected to perform well in school and socially.

Avoid The Side Effects Of Non-Stimulant Medication

While non-stimulant medications for ADHD are not as likely to cause side effects as their stimulant counterparts they can still occur. These side effects include many of the same as stimulant medications with the addition of dizziness, fatigue, upset stomach, and nausea.

How To Use CBD Oil For ADHD

Using CBD oil for ADHD looks the same as for any other condition or recreation use. It is generally consumed through vaping or ingesting orally. It is recommended that new users use oral CBD first because side effects are less likely to occur.

Starting with a few drops under the tongue, infusing food with CBD oil, or taking a capsule are all effective means to ingest CBD orally.

Formal guidelines on how to use CBD oil for ADHD do not exist at this time. But it is known that vaping CBD oil will provide quicker relief of symptoms as it allows the compound to enter the bloodstream much quicker. There is also no formal dosing recommendations for using CBD oil for ADHD treatment.

Dosing for related symptoms, such as anxiety, have been studied. One 2017 study showed that 600mg of CBD to be enough to reduce most anxiety. However, starting with the smallest dose possible, 25mg is recommended as each individual may have a different tolerance and need.

Can You Give CBD Oil To Children?

Studies looking at the effects of CBD oil for ADHD in children are not popular due to the negative connotations of CBD and marijuana in general. While studies have not been conducted some individuals have taken matters into their own hands by conducting a Facebook poll.

In 2015 a poll asked parents of children with epilepsy who treated their symptoms with CBD whether it was effective. The poll reported 117 parents responses and those parents stated their children had improvements in sleep, mood, and focus.

CBD Oil For ADHD Children Dosage

Because no real study has been conducted on children for CBD oil dosage no formal dosage recommendation exists. Giving a child an alternative medicine should always be cleared with their healthcare provider first.

Is CBD Oil Legal In My State?

Cannabis has two primary subspecies, marijuana, and hemp. While 33 states and the District of Columbia have legalized marijuana in some form, CBD derived from marijuana is still considered a schedule 1 drug by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

This makes it illegal federally and also makes it difficult to conduct high-quality studies. However, CBD derived from hemp is a different story. CBD coming from hemp, the cannabis sativa plant, is legal in all 50 states.

There are 10 states where CBD from both hemp and marijuana are legal; Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington. Three states steadfast in their legal classification of CBD from either form of cannabis and those are Idaho, Nebraska, and South Dakota.

CBD derived from hemp is legal in the remaining 37 states.

The Advantages Of Using CBD Oil For ADHD

While additional research is still needed to determine the full benefits of CBD oil for ADHD, ADHD patients should not fret as this further research is just around the corner.

The cannabidiol hype is really just getting started and will prompt researchers soon enough to study the effects of cannabidiol on people with ADHD.
