As laws and attitudes surrounding marijuana and its potential positive benefits have begun to change, we are finally learning about the varied benefits of the active components of both marijuana and hemp plants. Getting “high” is not even close to the only thing that can be gained from this amazing plant.
In fact, one of the alternative treatments for a wide range of disorders that is growing in popularity is the use of cannabidiol CBD. CBD is just one of some 80 active ingredients that can be found in the humble marijuana plant. Unlike its more well-known cousin, THC, cannabidiol CBD does not produce any psychoactive effects, meaning it won’t get you “high” or produce any sort of buzz.
This is great news for people who are interested in the potential health benefits associated with CBD, but that do not want to smoke marijuana or get high in order to glean these benefits. CBD can be extracted in a number of different ways, isolating it from the other components of the plant. Most commonly available is what is called CBD oil.
CBD oil is CBD that is extracted from marijuana or hemp plants, often using alcohol, apple cider vinegar, or fat-based products to extract the compound. This extraction can then be taken orally or it can be used to make a variety of other products from skin cream which is applied topically to edibles that contain your daily dose of CBD oil.
If you happen to live in an area that has looser laws surrounding the availability of cannabis related products, you might be able to access CBD crystals. CBD crystals are not only highly versatile, allowing you to use it in pretty much any application, they also the purest form of CBD you can find—often at least 98% with no fragrance molecules or other impurities. Crystals are preferable if you have access to them as they are more pure, versatile, and easier to dose.
The commonest way that people consume CBD is orally, often through what is called a tincture. This is a dropperful of pure CBD extract, most often taken under the tongue, once daily. This allows you to quickly absorb the CBD, providing relief and benefits as quickly as possible. However, something a lot of people may not be aware of is how easily you can bake with pure CBD, getting your daily dose of the substance in the form of a tasty treat.
Candy and baked goods are among the most popular ways to cook with CBD and even THC crystals or oils, but the sky really is the limit. You can easily make pretty much any type of food or even drink and add some CBD and it works incredibly well, but my personal favorite way to make tasty candy.
You can use either oil or crystals to bake and cook with. The easiest and most common way to incorporate CBD into your favorite recipe is to mix it with butter or oil. This is best achieved by slowly heating up the oil or butter and allowing the CBD oil or crystals to fully dissolve and integrate into the butter or oil. Once you have the CBD butter or oil fully combined, it can easily be used in your favorite recipes with no need for any alterations beyond making the CBD butter/oil.
A lot of people will use the butter or oil in their baked goods and this is a great way to share with others. You do not have to limit yourself to baked goods and candy, though. You can easily use CBD infused butter or oil in your favorite savory recipes, in condiments, and even in drinks and other beverages. When it comes to CBD candy treats, my personal favorite is the gummy bear, so I’ll briefly walk through how to make a tasty CBD gummy at home, without a lot of fuss.
You will need a few tools in order to do this correctly. You’ll need gummy bear molds, a saucepan, whisk, a high-quality durable spatula, a measuring cup, and a funnel. For this recipe, you will want to use a tincture, which is a quick and easy 1-ounce measurement of liquid CBD.
Take about half a cup of coconut water (or coconut oil) and bring it to the boil with a couple of organic green tea bags and steep for no more than 10 minutes. Then, remove the tea bags and toss. Next, you will want to add about 3/4 cup of your favorite juice (I like tart cherry best) and a few tablespoons of honey. You will want to gently boil this mixture for a few minutes.
Next, you will need to add about 1 1/2 of gelatin and whisk briskly for about four minutes. If you have a condiment bottle, use the funnel to pour the mixture into the bottle for a much easier time filling the gummy bear molds.
Once the molds have been filled, you will need to put them in the fridge for at least 15 minutes or until they are fully set. Most people prefer to enjoy them once they have fully set and cooled completely.
Using this basic recipe you can easily tailor these gummies to your personal preferences and favorite flavors. They are highly versatile and are an incredibly tasty way to get a good dose of CBD. Don’t be afraid to play around with different flavor combinations until you find your favorite.
As CBD is growing in popularity for its wide range of therapeutic uses, people are looking for more ways to take CBD. One of the more popular ways, aside from just taking it sublingually, is to use CBD when cooking. Most popular are baked goods and other desserts as the CBD can be easily incorporated into oil and butter, then used in recipes as normal. Tasty gummy snacks like the recipe provided here offer another tasty way to enjoy this powerful substance that has a lot of benefits without the psychoactive quality of THC-based products.
